AN/PEQ Boxes: Tactical Aesthetics and Useful In-Game Functions

AN/PEQ boxes are inspired by military devices used to house lasers or aiming modules. In airsoft, they serve two main purposes: adding a realistic look to the replica and integrating tactical lighting functions when needed. There are two main categories: dummy boxes, which are purely aesthetic, and functional boxes equipped with LED modules and sometimes visible or infrared lasers (depending on regulations).

Various Formats to Fit Your Setup

These boxes are available in several formats, the most common being:

  • PEQ-15: compact and discreet, ideal for lightweight setups.
  • PEQ-16: slightly bulkier, usually offering more lighting options.
  • DBAL, LA5, or generic variants with designs similar to real military equipment.

Each format may vary depending on whether it includes a battery compartment, an integrated light module, or simply a hollow shell for aesthetic use.

LED Light Function with Adjustable Brightness

Some functional models come with a built-in LED flashlight, providing sufficient illumination for dark or indoor environments. On certain boxes, you can adjust the light intensity, allowing you to tailor the beam’s brightness to game conditions. This function can be activated via an integrated button or, on some models, with a remote pressure switch.

Remote Switch: Comfort and Responsiveness

Several functional boxes come with a remote switch or offer one as an optional accessory. This type of control, usually mounted on the handguard or grip, allows you to activate the light without releasing your hold on the replica. It enhances responsiveness and comfort during dynamic phases or in low-light environments.

The cable is usually short, designed for a clean setup on standard Picatinny, M-LOK, or KeyMod rails, depending on the mounting system.

Realistic Aesthetics and Modularity

Even in dummy form, an AN/PEQ box contributes to the realistic look of the replica. It can also serve as a battery housing for front-wired setups. The box can be combined with other elements such as lasers, flashlights, or optics to create a coherent and tactical loadout.
